Where Are All the Chess Pieces in RE2: Complete Puzzle Guide

Navigating the subterranean sewers in Resident Evil 2 presents one of the most memorable challenges in the game. To rescue your companion and unlock the massive electronic door in the Monitor Room, players must track down six electronic chess plugs scattered throughout the dark corridors. Understanding where each piece is hidden and how to correctly place them saves valuable time and ammunition during your survival run.

Finding the Default Plugs in the Monitor Room

When you first arrive in the Monitor Room, you will notice that three chess plugs are already plugged into the wall sockets. The Pawn, Bishop, and Knight plugs are ready to be collected or used right away in this central location. You can safely remove these plugs from their slots to inventory them while you search for the remaining pieces.

Locating the King and Queen Plugs

To acquire the King and Queen plugs, you must navigate to the Supplies Storage Room in the lower sewer level. Solving a multi-step door puzzle inside this room requires swapping the plugs back and forth to unlock sealed gates. Clearing this section allows you to claim both pieces alongside special weapon upgrades like the Flamethrower or Spark Shot.

Retrieving the Elusive Rook Plug

The Rook plug is located near the Workroom Lift area on the upper level of the sewers. To reach it, players must use the T-Bar Valve Handle to access the Workroom and unlock the back exit. Once the shortcut door is opened, you can pull the Rook plug directly out of its socket panel.

Solving the Monitor Room Chess Puzzle

After gathering all six plugs, return to the Monitor Room to solve the final door puzzle. The arrangement changes depending on whether you are playing a first playthrough scenario or a 2nd Run playthrough. For a first scenario run, place the Knight, Rook, and Bishop on the wall near the door, and the King, Queen, and Pawn on the opposite wall. For a 2nd Run scenario, line up the King, Bishop, and Queen on one side while placing the Knight, Rook, and Pawn on the other.
